ABSTRACT

Precision- Agriculture and Forestry have opened new frontiers in business management. They pose the need for new generations of information systems, specifically tailored to the management of "land mobile processes", where decisions derive from information often originating not from "measured data" but normally from "interpreted data" (when not even "estimated").
In this context, the concept of "measurement precision" takes on entirely new connotations, given that it no longer has an absolute value, but must be constantly calibrated on the decision-making objectives of the enterprise.
What are the real requirements of precision in management activities? How can these requirements influence production efficiency, production costs and product quality? What are the measuring precision needs to make a traceability target reliable? And which ones for a certification target? How to scale the concept of precision at the different territorial scales of investigation (land, farm, field/parcel, plant)? Is it possible to identify a common methodological approach in the various application domains of agri-environmental companies?
The session is open to all researchers and professionals who can contribute, through their experiences and points of view, to lay the foundations for an interdisciplinary clarity on these issues.

TOPICS

We welcome contributions that:

  • propose a classification methodology for measure precision according to a specific domain of interest and related decisional needs;
  • provide suggestions on monitoring practices to be integrated into information systems;
  • describe precision approaches for land and environmental monitoring at different scales;
  • report on precision needs in the different certification fields of interest for the agriculture and forestry sectors (machines, plants, products, processes etc.);
  • provide a methodological approach to deal with precision in automated site-specific operations;
  • report on peculiar aspects of measurement problems on their own domain of interest and related farming systems (arable farms, orchards, forestry, livestock) or specific related operations (spreading, irrigation, harvesting etc.).

ABOUT THE CONVENERS

Prof. Fabrizio Mazzetto, MSc in Agricultural Sciences (1983) and PhD in Agricultural Engineering (1990), both at University of Milan (Italy). He is now Full Professor of Farm Machinery and Mechanization at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the Free University of Bolzano. His main research topics are related to: a) farm machinery and agricultural mechanization, including the development of new prototypes for mountain contexts; b) ICT application to supply information management tasks of farm and forestry processes; c) development of precision agriculture and forestry techniques, d) energy applications in the rural sector. He has been an energy consultant for the FAO-UNDP and has coordinated several national and international research projects. Winner of some national research awards, he is a member of the “Accademia dei Georgofili” of Florence and is the President of the 7th Section of the Italian Society of Agricultural Engineering, dealing with the ICT applications in agriculture.

Prof. Claudio Gandolfi, MSc in Hydraulic Engineering (1984) at the Politecnico di Milano (Italy). He is now Full Professor of Agricultural Hydraulics at the University of Milan. His main research interests are hydrological modeling and integrated water resources management, with particular reference to the specific issues of rural areas. Most of his work employs mathematical modelling, often in combination with the collection of empirical data from field and laboratory experiments, in order to better understand and explain hydrological processes and irrigation systems behavior. He has coordinated several research projects on these topics and he has also been active in commissioned and collaborative research projects and consulting. He has served in different academic roles, including Vicerector for Knowledge Transfer of the University of Milan, he is chief editor of the Journal of Agricultural Engineering and he often acts as a reviewer for the main international journals in the field of water resources.

Dr. Pasqualina Sacco, MSc in Environmental Sciences (1997) at Ca 'Foscari University of Venice (Italy) and PhD in Agricultural Ecology at the University of Udine-IT (2001) in collaboration with the Univesität für Bodenkultur in Wien-AT, is now senior researcher at the Fraunhofer Italia IEC of Bozen/Bolzano, where she mainly deals with topics related to innovation management, predictive maintenance for Industry 4.0, development of new tools to improve precision agriculture applications and sustainability practices. She participated in several national and European research projects, providing skills in systems analysis and modeling, system thinking, multicriteria analysis, design and prototyping of ICT tools.

Prof.Massimo Lazzari, MSc in Agricultural Sciences (1981) at University of Milan (Italy), since 2004 he is Associate Professor of Livestock Mechanization at Department of Veterinary Sciences for Health, Animal Production and Food Safety of the University of Milan. His main research topics are related to: a) mechatronics and computer science for agricultural and livestock sectors; b) harvesting of agricultural products; c) use of renewable energy sources in agriculture; d) GPS application and electronic traceability. He coordinated several national and international research projects, and is a Full Member of the “Accademia dei Georgofili” of Florence.

Prof. Rino Gubiani, MSc in Agricultural Sciences (1984), he is Associate Professor of Farm Machinery and Mechanization at University of Udine (Italy), DI4A Department, since 2007. His main research topics are related to: a) vineyard mechanization, with a focus on work quality in vineyard sprayers and machines calibration; b) safety and health in farm machinery and agricultural workplaces; c) design of plant layout of wineries; d) biomass production for energy. He has coordinated several national and international research projects, and is a member of the Italian Society of Agricultural Engineering.
