TECHNOLOGIES FOR MONITORING ANIMAL BEHAVIOUR AND ITS SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT

ABSTRACT

The focus will be on the use of different sensors and positioning tags to improve the animal welfare both favouring innate behaviour of animals and by enhancing the rearing environment.

Researcher at the Agricultural Faculty of Perugia 1990-2001.
Associate Professor at the Agricultural Faculty of Perugia University and Department of Agricultural Food and Environmental Science Perugia University (2001 to present).

EDUCATION
Degree in Agricultural Science in 1984 and Ph.D. in 1990.

SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY
Produced about 410 scientific papers, reviews, chapter of book, monografies, proceedings; about 190 papers are recorded by ISI (Scopus H index =37, 4,745 citations; Google Scholar H = 52; 8,945 citations).
He presented many communications, reviews and invited papers at National and International Congresses. Main research interest is rabbit and poultry production. Researches are mainly directed on the effect of extensive rearing system on the performance, quality, welfare and environmental impact of poultry.
He cooperates with various National and International research groups: Italian University Padova, Siena, Milano, Bologna, Torino, Palermo e Varese; Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell’Umbria e delle Marche; INRA-Tolosa and INRA Nouzilly; Institute of Animal Breeding and Genetics IFA - Tulnn e Institute for Meat Hygiene, Meat Technology and Food Science, Univ. He was Editor of Italian Journal of Animal Science and now Editor of “Animals”.

In a recent surveys (2020 and 2021) he was recognised in the 2% top scientist of all the discipline (Plos (Plos Biology “Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators” JPA Ioannidis, KW Boyack, J Baas, https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pbio.3000918).

MEMBERSHIP
Member of several Scientific associations: Associazione Scientifica di Produzione Animale, WRSA (World Rabbit Science Association) and WPSA (World Poultry Science Association). President of Italian branch of WRSA until 2021. Member of the Technical Commission of AIA (Association of Italian Breeders) who establishes the scheme for the genetic improvement and safeguard in rabbit and local poultry breeds.
